FAQs
Everything You Need To Know
What age should a puppy start training classes?
Most puppies can begin training classes from around 8–16 weeks, which is considered a critical socialisation window. During this period, puppies are forming impressions that will shape their behaviour into adulthood. Early classes help them build confidence, learn basic cues and become comfortable with new environments, people and other dogs. As long as the puppy has had its initial vaccinations and the training environment follows safe hygiene protocols, starting early provides a strong behavioural foundation that’s much harder to develop later.
Why is puppy socialisation so important?
Socialisation teaches puppies how to cope with everyday experiences without fear or overstimulation. Exposure to new people, dogs, sounds, surfaces and environments helps build emotional resilience and reduces the likelihood of problems such as anxiety, reactivity or poor behaviour later in life. Structured socialisation also helps puppies learn appropriate play behaviour and communication signals. When supported by positive training, these early experiences lead to well-rounded adult dogs that can adapt smoothly to home life, travel, vet visits and busy public environments.
What should a puppy learn in its first training course?
A quality puppy course focuses on early manners and confidence-building. Puppies typically learn cues such as sit, drop, stay, come when called, and how to walk calmly on a lead. Owners also learn how to manage common challenges like mouthing, toilet training, settling at home and preventing overexcitement. Just as importantly, puppies begin developing focus, self-control and trust in their handler. These early lessons make later stages of training far easier and support healthy behavioural development long-term.
